     Benson Community Education Email Updates – Be the first to know “what’s what” in Benson Community Education.  Sign up to receive a monthly email with updates of programs, events and classes being offered through Benson Schools and Benson Community Education!  We will be cutting back to 3 newsletter issues each year (spring/summer, fall and winter).       Benson Community Education and District Newsletter – The Benson Community Education and District newsletter will not be printed and mailed out this winter.  The newsletter will be available online on the district website around December 1.  Check it out for important information about the 2020-2021 school year and upcoming events.

     Elementary Boys Saturday Recreation Basketball Program – Flyers were sent home with boys in grades 1-6.  This program features individual shooting instruction, defensive fundamentals, ball handling, drills to practice at home, games, contests, and FUN!  The program is held at the Senior High East Gym.  The program runs for 8 Saturday mornings in December and January.  The instructors are high school coaches, community members and high school players.  Due to COVID regulations, youth basketball and youth wrestling programs will be limited to students enrolled at Benson Public Schools this year.  See the flyer for more COVID guidelines that will be followed.  The cost of the program is $35 which includes a t-shirt.  Please register online by Thursday, November 26, or by submitting a completed registration form to the Community Education office with cash or check payable to Benson Public Schools.  Registration will only be complete once payment is received.  Contact Community Education at 843-4545 or Adam Jensen (ajensen@benson.k12.mn.us) if you have questions.

      Youth Wrestling – Flyers were sent home with students in grades Kindergarten – 6th.  Parent meeting and singlet handout will be held on Monday, December 7, from 4:30 until 6:00 pm in Coach Thompson’s classroom (433).  Practice schedule and other paperwork will be distributed at the meeting.  Singlets will be provided but must be returned at the end of the season.  Practice will be on Monday evenings.  First practice is December 14th with PreK-2nd grade from 5:00-5:45 pm and 3rd-6th grade from 6:00-7:00 pm.      Jazz -n- Pizzazz - A modified dance program will start the week of January 4th with a recital on May 1st.  Details and registration information were emailed to all Benson Pre-K through 12th grade students.  Due to COVID regulations, the dance program will be limited to students enrolled at Benson Public Schools this year.  We will have strict guidelines to keep students in the same COVID "bubbles" they are in while in school.  Cost varies based on grade level and include dance classes and a t-shirt to be worn at the dance recital.  Online registration is open.  Contact Benson Community Education at 320-843-4545 if you have questions.

     Tae Kwon Do – Benson Community Education is excited to partner with Master Marc Nokleby in offering Tae Kwon Do as one of our programs.  Unfortunately, due to COVID, we are currently unable to offer this at Northside Elementary as we had planned due to the no visitor policy during this time.  We are currently looking for an alternate location and will share with you once we are either able to find another location or have been given the clearance to hold in our school.  Any questions?  Feel free to contact Master Nokleby at mnokleby@leestkd.com.

     Virtual Online Classes - Benson is looking to host virtual classes.  If you have class ideas or would like to teach a virtual online class, please contact Benson Community Ed at 320-843-4545.  MRVED, our education district, is also putting together virtual learning classes for residents in our school districts.  More information about available classes will be in our fall online Community Ed/District newsletter.  You will contact the host site to register and pay for the online classes so you can get the correct link to join the class.  You must give your email address when you register so you can be sent the zoom or google link to join the class.

     Cinderella @ Chanhassen Dinner Theatre - Postponed – For the first time ever on Chanhassen’s Main Stage, see Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella!  This magical Tony Award-winning musical is the treasured story you know and love.  We received an email from Chanhassen Dinner Theatre that they have suspended all performances in the dinner theatre.  We are working with them to schedule another date.  Register online or by calling Benson Community Education at 320-843-4545.

       First Aid and CPR – We are partnering with the Swift County-Benson Health Services for Heartsaver CPR/AED/First Aid.  This is a classroom, video-based, instructor led course that teaches students critical skills needed to respond to and manage a first aid, choking or sudden cardiac arrest emergency.  Upon successful course completion, you will receive an American Heart Association course completion card that is valid for 2 years.  Cost for a single class (CPR or First Aid) is $30 or both classes for $40.  The book is an additional $10 if you want to purchase it.  Class dates to be determined.  Call Benson Community Education at 320-843-4545 for more information.

      Adult Basic Education (ABE) – The mission of Adult Basic Education (ABE) in Minnesota is to provide adults with educational opportunities to acquire and improve their literacy skills necessary to become self-sufficient and to participate effectively as productive workers, family members and citizens.  To be eligible for ABE, an individual must be 17 or over, not enrolled in secondary school and functioning below the 12th grade level in any of the basic academic areas including reading, math, writing and speaking English.  In-person classes are on hold due to COVID.  Online opportunities are being looked at.  Contact Benson Community Education at 320-843-4545 for more information.

      Discovery Kids –Discovery Kids offers extended learning care from 5:30 am-5:30 pm Monday through Friday for children ages 6 weeks through 6th grade.  We are located in the new Early Childhood Center at Northside Elementary School.  Our mission is to provide child care in a positive environment to encourage healthy growth and development in children.  Infants, toddlers, pre-school and school-age kids will all be in separate rooms.  Preschool and school-aged children will be bussed by Benson Public Schools to and from Summer Rec activities.  A staff member will drive, or will accompany, students on the bus.  Discovery Kids will provide one meal and two snacks for a child who is in attendance at the time of serving.  We are accepting registrations for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school-age children.  The registration form and handbook are available on the school website.  Discovery Kids direct dial phone number is 320-842-2723.

      Senior Defensive Driving Classes – Defensive Driving classes are offered to people 55 years of age and over to review and discuss courteous driving and the rules of the road.  If you are 55 years of age and older, you receive 10% off your auto insurance for three years, after completing the eight-hour class.  You must repeat the class every three years and can do this with the four-hour refresher class. We are working on a Defensive Driving in-person class in January.  Please call Community Education at 320-843-4545 to get on the list for that class.

     Effective January 1, 2021, the Minnesota Safety Council has made the decision to eliminate onsite 8-hour defensive driving courses due to the incredible increase in online defensive driving training for first time participants.  The initial eight-hour class is available online through the MN Safety Council.  Both the on-site and online classes are produced by the MN Safety Council.

        Driver’s Education Classes – This class fulfills the mandatory 30 hours of classroom instruction.  Classroom work can be done prior to being 15 years of age but the students must be 15 years of age to take the permit test.  After passing the permit test, arrangements for Behind the Wheel will be made.  The 16-year old student may take the road test after the required six months of practice driving (which will include the six hours of Behind the Wheel training).  Fee is $300 for classroom instruction and behind the wheel.  A deposit of $105 is needed to attend the class.  Our next class is tentatively slated for March.  Call Community Education at 320-843-4545 for more information or to get your name added to our contact list. 

      The MN Department of Public Safety Driver and Vehicle Services division (DPS-DVS) is discontinuing class D knowledge tests on a first-come-first-served basis and will require appointments beginning Monday, July 13.  You will need to book appointments online at drive.mn.gov.  DVS exam stations will not accept walk-ins for class D knowledge tests (written permit test); an appointment will be required.  Willmar is one of the 14 regional DVS exam stations.

      The DVS is unveiling new options for students to take their knowledge tests to get their permits.  It can now be done online at home.  We have also applied to be a testing point here at school.  More information about the new online testing option is available at the MN DVS website site under Online Knowledge Testing.

      New Program Ideas Wanted – Community Education is always looking for adults to share their talents, skills, expertise, hobbies and career experiences with students of all ages!  A teaching degree is not necessary.  Classes are flexible because they are built around the needs of the people involved.  Call Shelly at 843-4545 if you would like to teach a class or if you have an innovative idea for a class or activity.  We welcome your ideas!!

      Help Wanted – Summer Rec & Aquatics Jobs – Benson Community Ed is now accepting applications for a variety of summer positions:  baseball/softball coaches, baseball/softball umps, field maintenance, crossing guard, pool lifeguards, and swim lesson instructors.  Applicants should be highly motivated and interested in working with youth and adults.  Applications are available online or in the Community Ed office.  Application deadline: Friday, April 5.

      Lifeguarding Today – This class is for those wishing to become a lifeguard.  Must by 15 years old, be able to swim 500 yards, tread water for 1 minute without using hand and dive to 9’ and bring a diving brick to surface.  Dates to be determined.  Contact Community Ed at 320-843-4545 if you’re interested.

     Jazz-N-Pizzazz Dance Recital – Dancers of Jazz-n-Pizzazz are gearing up for this year’s dance recital – “We Got The Beat.”  There will be four performances: Saturday, April 13 (Pre-K through grade 4) – 10:30 a.m.; Saturday, April 13 - grades 5-12 will perform at 2:00 p.m., followed by an intermission and then Pre-K through grade 4 will perform at 4:00 p.m.; Saturday, April 13 (grades 5-12) – 7:00 p.m.; Sunday, April 14 (Pre-K through grade 12) – 1:30 p.m.  Performances will be held in the Senior High Gym.  All seating is general admission.

     Summer Softball and Baseball – Be watching for forms going home with students in April for registration information for summer ball traveling leagues.  Chippewa Valley Girls League is a Modified Pitch Softball for girls currently in grades 4-6.  West Central League Baseball is for boys currently in grades 3-6.
