Defensive Driving (55 alive) ClassesOffered through the Minnesota Safety Council, Defensive Driving classes are offered to people 55 years of age and over to review and discuss courteous driving and rules of the road.  If you are 55 years of age or older, you will receive 10% off your auto insurance for three years.  Benson is offering the 4-hour refresher courses on March 29th at 5:30 p.m. at the Benson High School. Cost is $25.  Register online or by calling 843-4545.

Discovery Kids –Discovery Kids offers extended learning care from 5:30 am-5:30 pm Monday through Friday for children ages 6 weeks through 6th grade.  We are located in the new Early Childhood Center at Northside Elementary School.  We are accepting registrations for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school-age children.  The registration form and handbook are available on the school website.  Discovery Kids direct dial phone number is 320-842-2723.

Tae Kwon Do – Benson Community Ed is once again excited to offer Tae Kwon Do through Lee’s Tae Kown Do with Master Marc Nokleby.  TKD will be a monthly fee based class for people 6 years and up.  It will run Tuesdays and Thursdays September through May.  Class time options are 5:30-6:30 OR 6:30-7:30 p.m.  Classes will be held at Northside Elementary.  Cost is $35 a month.

      FA / CPR / AED Class    We offer an American Heart Association First Aid/CPR class through the Swift County Benson Hospital. Costs are:  CPR or FA only - $20:  CPR and FA - $30:  If you wish to purchase the workbook: $10. Class will be Monday, January 24th at 5:30 p.m.

Pickleball League – We are looking at offering a Pickleball League in conjunction with our Volleyball League late November and are looking for teams!  This will be our first time offering and are still working out 56201the details.  But, play will be Wednesday nights at the high school.  Team fee will be determined by the number of teams and length of play.  For more information or to register a team, call Community Ed at 843-4545 or email [email protected].

      New Program Ideas Wanted – Community Education is always looking for adults to share their talents, skills, expertise, hobbies and career experiences with students of all ages!  A teaching degree is not necessary.  Classes are flexible because they are built around the needs of the people involved.  Call Shelly at 843-4545 if you would like to teach a class or if you have an innovative idea for a class or activity.  We welcome your ideas!!

      Help Wanted – Summer Rec & Aquatics Jobs – Benson Community Ed is now accepting applications for a variety of summer positions:  baseball/softball coaches, baseball/softball umps, field maintenance, crossing guard, pool lifeguards, and swim lesson instructors.  Applicants should be highly motivated and interested in working with youth and adults.  Applications are available online or in the Community Ed office.  Application deadline: Friday, April 5.

      Lifeguarding Today – This class is for those wishing to become a lifeguard.  Must by 15 years old, be able to swim 500 yards, tread water for 1 minute without using hand and dive to 9’ and bring a diving brick to surface.  Dates to be determined.  Contact Community Ed at 320-843-4545 if you’re interested.

      Water Safety Instructor – Those who earn their certificate will be able to teach Red Cross swimming lessons.  Must be 16 years old by the last day of class.  Must successfully complete the pre-course online session consisting of swimming skills and knowledge and attend all classes.  Dates to be determined.  Contact Community Ed at 320-843-4545 if you’re interested.

     Jazz-N-Pizzazz Dance Recital – Dancers of Jazz-n-Pizzazz are gearing up for this year’s dance recital – “We Got The Beat.”  There will be four performances: Saturday, April 13 (Pre-K through grade 4) – 10:30 a.m.; Saturday, April 13 - grades 5-12 will perform at 2:00 p.m., followed by an intermission and then Pre-K through grade 4 will perform at 4:00 p.m.; Saturday, April 13 (grades 5-12) – 7:00 p.m.; Sunday, April 14 (Pre-K through grade 12) – 1:30 p.m.  Performances will be held in the Senior High Gym.  All seating is general admission.

      Jazz-n-Pizzazz Ticket Sales –Advance sale tickets will be available at the Benson Community Education Office (located in the senior high school) starting Monday, April 1 during office hours (8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.)  Ticket prices are $5.00.  Tickets are required for everyone attending the performances.

      First Aid and CPR – We are partnering with the Swift County-Benson Health Services for Heartsaver CPR/AED/First Aid.  This is a classroom, video-based, instructor led course that teaches students critical skills needed to respond to and manage a first aid, choking or sudden cardiac arrest emergency.  Upon successful course completion, you will receive an American Heart Association course completion card that is valid for 2 years.  The next course is tentatively scheduled for April 2019.  Call Benson Community Education at 320-843-4545 to register.

     Sunday Open Gym – Open Gym is from 1:00 – 3:30 pm in the senior high gym.  Participants should bring their own basketball.  To keep the gym floor clean and dry, please carry in your basketball/tennis shoes.  Use the main entrance in the high school circle drive (Door #1).  Last year, we had many wonderful businesses and individuals that sponsored Open Gym to keep it free.  The last day of Open Gym is Sunday, March 31st.

     Summer Softball and Baseball – Be watching for forms going home with students in April for registration information for summer ball traveling leagues.  Chippewa Valley Girls League is a Modified Pitch Softball for girls currently in grades 4-6.  West Central League Baseball is for boys currently in grades 3-6.

     Mama Mia @ Chanhassen Dinner Theatre, Saturday, September 28 – One mom. One daughter. Three possible dads.             Driver’s Education Classes – This class fulfills the mandatory 30 hours of classroom instruction.  Classroom work can be done prior to being 15 years of age but the students must be 15 years of age to take the permit test.  After passing the permit test, arrangements for Behind the Wheel will be made.  The 16-year old student may take the road test after the required six months of practice driving (which will include the six hours of Behind the Wheel training).  Call Community Education at 320-843-4545 to register.  The next session of classroom instruction will be June 2019.  Roger Lindahl is the instructor.  Fee is $275 for classroom instruction and behind the wheel.  A deposit of $95 will be needed to attend the class. 

 

             

      Written drivers’ tests have resumed in Benson.  They will be given on the 2ndThursday of each month.  For more information, contact the MN Driver’s License Exam Station in Willmar, 320-231-1735.
