            Registration for Classes - For more information on classes and trips, or to register, call the Community Education office – (320) 843-4545.  Register on-line by visiting the Benson Public Schools website,, clicking on the Online Payments box in the left column, and then clicking the Community Education button.                                                                                                                                                                       * * * * *      

            Lifeguard Training – This American Red Cross Lifeguard course is for those wishing to become a lifeguard.  Students must by 15 years old on or before the final day of the course, able to swim 300 yards continuously, tread water for 2 minutes using only legs and dive to a depth of 7-10 feet and bring a diving brick to the surface.  Class limit is 10.  Class will be held May 25 through May 27 at various times and locations.  The length of the class is approximately 24-25 hours.  Pool events will be held at the outdoor pool; classroom events will be held at Benson High School, Room 315.  Cost is $145 which includes pocket mask and a download book.  It is an additional $45 to purchase a printed book.  Registration deadline is May 23.  Call Benson Community Education at 320-843-4545 if you have questions or to register.  You may also register on-line.

            WSI (Water Safety Instructor) Training – The WSI course trains swim instructor candidates to teach all of the courses presented in the Swimming and Water Safety program to all ages, youth through adult.  Class limit is 10.  Classes will be held June 1 through June 5 at various time and locations.  Pool events will be held at the outdoor pool; classroom events will be held at Benson High School, Room 315.  Cost is $200 plus an additional fee of $35 to American Red Cross.  Registration deadline is May 29.  Call Benson Community Education at 320-843-4545 if you have questions or to register.  You may also register on-line.

                   Benson Outdoor Pool Dates, Hours & Fees – The Benson Outdoor Swimming Pool will be open Saturday, May 26, through Sunday, August 19.  The pool will close at 5:00 p.m. on the following dates:  June 14 (Benson Band Festival Parade), July 4 and July 21 (Kid Day).  Starting August 13, it will close at 5:00 p.m. every day.  Pool Pass and Punch Tickets are available at the City Hall (1410 Kansas Ave.) and at the pool.

 On-line Summer Registration – On-line registration began on Monday, May 7th at 4:00 p.m.  For detailed information on summer activities, refer to the ISD #777 Community Services newsletter which were mailed on May 1st to all households in our district.  More information about the registration process can be found in the district newsletter.

            Preschool Options for Fall 2018 – It’s time to start thinking about plans for you preschooler for this fall.  A 3 Year-Old School Readiness and a 4 Year-Old Preschool with be offered.  Class sizes to these programs are limited.  Class registration opened at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 16.  If classes are full, add your child to the Wait List.

            First Aid and CPR – We are partnering with the Swift County-Benson Health Services for Heartsaver CPR/AED/First Aid.  This is a classroom, video-based, instructor led course that teaches students critical skills needed to respond to and manage a first aid, choking or sudden cardiac arrest emergency.  Upon successful course completion, you will receive an American Heart Association course completion card that is valid for 2 years.  For more information or to register call Benson Community Education at 320-843-4545.

            Adult Basic Education (ABE/GED/ESL) – Classes will resume in the Fall of 2018.

            Discovery Kids –Discovery Kids offers extended learning care from 5:30 am-6:30 pm Monday through Friday for children ages 6 weeks through 6th grade.  We are located on the ground level and 1st floor of Benson Elementary (old JH building). Use entrance #33.  Infants, toddler, pre-school and school-age kids will all be in separate rooms.  Preschool and school-aged children will be bussed by Benson Public Schools to and from Northside Elementary and to Summer Rec activities.  A staff member will drive, or will accompany, students on the bus.  Discovery Kids will provide one meal and two snacks for a child who is in attendance at the time of serving.  We are accepting registrations for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school-age children.  The registration form and handbook are available on the school website.  More information can be found on the Discovery Kids website:  Discovery Kids direct dial phone number is 842-2723.

             Senior Defensive Driving Classes – Defensive Driving classes are offered to people 55 years of age and over to review and discuss courteous driving and the rules of the road.  If you are 55 years of age and older, you receive 10% off your auto insurance for three years, after completing the eight-hour class.  You must repeat the class every three years and can do this with the four-hour class.  The classes are held at the Benson High School Library.  Pre-registration is necessary.  Cost is $17.00 per class (payable to Benson Public Schools).   Registration and payment are due one week prior to the class.  Register online or by calling Community Education at 320-843-4545.  The classes are produced by the MN Safety Council.

            Driver’s Education Classes – This class fulfills the mandatory 30 hours of classroom instruction.  Classroom work can be done prior to being 15 years of age but the students must be 15 years of age to take the permit test.  After passing the permit test, arrangements for Behind the Wheel will be made.  The 16-year old student may take the road test after the required six months of practice driving (which will include the six hours of Behind the Wheel training).  Classes meet in BHS room #315.  Parent Meeting is Wednesday, June 6, 6:00 p.m. in room #315.  Roger Lindahl is the instructor.  Call Community Education at 320-843-4545 to register. 

                 Section A:  June 4-15, 7:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.

                 Section B:  June 4-15, 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

            Written drivers’ tests will NOT be held in Benson until further notice due to construction at the Court House and LEC.
