Registration for Classes - For more information on classes and trips or to register, call the Community Education office – (320) 843-4545.  Register on-line by visiting the Benson Public Schools website, www.benson.k12.mn.us, clicking on the Online Payments box in the left column, and then clicking the Community Education button. 

Young Rembrandts Drawing Classes – We are working with this award winning program to offer online, on-demand drawing classes for our own young Rembrandts! There are three class options available at this time:  Anime and Manga Drawing; Fashion, Florists and Makeup; and February on Demand (with 4 different features). Each class comes with your own unique web link allowing you to watch, pause and resume as needed.  Costs vary from $29 to $49 each.  For more information, call Community Ed at 843-4545.

ECFE – Our Winter/Spring ECFE classes kick off on February 8th and will run through April 26th. We are offering two classes on Monday evenings:  4:30 (class full) and 6:00 p.m.  Both classes are for children ages 18 months-4 years. Cost of ECFE is a sliding fee based on family income.  No family is turned away for their inability to pay.  Register online under ECFE.  For more information, call 843-4545.

JH Softball with Coach Schwarz  - Preseason review and introduction to softball skills and drills. All girls interested in playing at the seventh and eighth grade level should attend this session.  Fundamentals of the game and well as introduction to different drills will be reviewed before the regular season kicks off.  March 11th, 15th and 17th from 3:30-5:00 p.m.  FREE but pre-registration required.

Elementary Softball Clinic - This program is to introduce the fun of the playing softball to our very young girls, promoting participation and the movements of the game.  It will be fun and fast paced using softies and whiffle bats.   Students should bring a glove but it is not required.  Senior softball players will be giving a short talk at the end of the session on why girls should play sports and how it can help them in life.  Participants will get a youth t-shirt and an autographed card at the end of the clinic.  Coaching staff and high school players will be hosting this program for FREE but pre-registration required.  Grades 1-3: March 23rd from 3:30-4:30; Grades 4-6: March 24th from 3:30-4:40 p.m.

Fastpitch Hitting Clinic – Mackenzie Dokkebakken will provide instruction on the hitting presentation and swing at the plate.  This clinic will be held at the batting cage in Benson Schools.  Open to softball players grades 10-12. Register for a time with Mackenzie in the Business Office at Benson Schools by March 22nd.  FREE!

Softball Pitching Clinic – Maria Hanson will be walking through the fundamentals for with softball players in grades 9-12.  She will help players with their pitching from the snaps to the full presentation and wind up. March 16th, 18th, 22nd and 24th from 3:30-4:30 p.m.  The clinic is FREE but pre-registration is required.

Tae Kwon Do – Benson Community Education is excited to partner with Master Marc Nokleby in offering Tae Kwon Do as one of our programs. TKD will kick off on February 9th and run through June 3rd.  Classes will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at Northside Elementary.  Cost is $35 a month.  Register online or by calling Community Education at 843-4545.  Any questions about TKD can be directed to contact Master Nokleby at mnokleby @leestkd.com.

 Tiny Tumblers Gymnastics for Grades 1-2. This camp is designed for the beginner level gymnasts. Participants will work on introductory skills on the bars, beam, and floor, increasing strength, flexibility, and coordination will also be emphasized. Mondays March 9 - April 12; 6-6:45 pm; $48

Twisters Gymnastics – for grades 3-6. This camp is designed for the beginner level gymnasts. Emphasis will be placed on learning front and back walkovers. In addition, participants will work on introductory gymnastics skills on the bars, beam, vault and floor, increasing strength, flexibility, and coordination will also be emphasized. Thursdays March 4-April 15; 6:00-7:00 pm; $54

Flippers Gymnastics – for grades 1-6. This camp is designed for the gymnast who can do back walkovers or kick over from bridge position with NO assistance. The class will emphasize learning back handsprings with proper body shape along with skills on the bars, beam, and vault. Wednesdays March 10-April 14; 6:00-7:00 pm; $54

Aerials Gymnastics – for grades 2-6. This camp is designed for gymnasts who can do round-off, back handsprings with little or no assistance. Skills and combinations required for competitive gymnastics will be emphasized on the bars, beam, floor, vault. Increasing strength and conditioning will also be emphasized. Tuesdays March 9 - April 13; 6:00-7:00 pm; $54

ACT Prep Class – BHS is committed to helping all students feel prepared to take the test and will offer ACT prep instruction including test-taking strategies, review of each of the 3 content areas, a full-length test simulation, followed by review and discussion of the test plus discussion on the writing prompt.  Taught by BHS Staff, this class is open to all Juniors taking their ACT test in late March.  Cost is $52 for all three sessions.

Adult Basic Education (ABE) – The mission of Adult Basic Education (ABE) in Minnesota is to provide adults with educational opportunities to acquire and improve their literacy skills necessary to become self-sufficient and to participate effectively as productive workers, family members and citizens.  To be eligible for ABE, an individual must be 17 or over, not enrolled in secondary school and functioning below the 12th grade level in any of the basic academic areas including reading, math, writing and speaking English.  In-person classes are on hold due to COVID.  Online opportunities are being looked at.  Contact Benson Community Education at 320-843-4545 for more information.

Discovery Kids –Discovery Kids offers extended learning care from 5:30 am-5:30 pm Monday through Friday for children ages 6 weeks through 6th grade.  We are located in the new Early Childhood Center at Northside Elementary School.  We are accepting registrations for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school-age children.  The registration form and handbook are available on the school website.  Discovery Kids direct dial phone number is 320-842-2723.

Driver’s Education Classes – This class fulfills the mandatory 30 hours of classroom instruction.  Classroom work can be done prior to being 15 years of age but the students must be 15 years of age to take the permit test.  After passing the permit test, arrangements for Behind the Wheel will be made.  The 16-year old student may take the road test after the required six months of practice driving (which will include the six hours of Behind the Wheel training).  Fee is $300 for classroom instruction and behind the wheel.  A deposit of $105 is needed to attend the class.  Next class will be held in June.   

      New Program Ideas Wanted – Community Education is always looking for adults to share their talents, skills, expertise, hobbies and career experiences with students of all ages!  A teaching degree is not necessary.  Classes are flexible because they are built around the needs of the people involved.  Call Shelly at 843-4545 if you would like to teach a class or if you have an innovative idea for a class or activity.  We welcome your ideas!!

      Help Wanted – Summer Rec & Aquatics Jobs – Benson Community Ed is now accepting applications for a variety of summer positions:  baseball/softball coaches, baseball/softball umps, field maintenance, crossing guard, pool lifeguards, and swim lesson instructors.  Applicants should be highly motivated and interested in working with youth and adults.  Applications are available online or in the Community Ed office.  Application deadline: Friday, April 5.

      Lifeguarding Today – This class is for those wishing to become a lifeguard.  Must by 15 years old, be able to swim 500 yards, tread water for 1 minute without using hand and dive to 9’ and bring a diving brick to surface.  Dates to be determined.  Contact Community Ed at 320-843-4545 if you’re interested.

     Jazz-N-Pizzazz Dance Recital – Dancers of Jazz-n-Pizzazz are gearing up for this year’s dance recital – “We Got The Beat.”  There will be four performances: Saturday, April 13 (Pre-K through grade 4) – 10:30 a.m.; Saturday, April 13 - grades 5-12 will perform at 2:00 p.m., followed by an intermission and then Pre-K through grade 4 will perform at 4:00 p.m.; Saturday, April 13 (grades 5-12) – 7:00 p.m.; Sunday, April 14 (Pre-K through grade 12) – 1:30 p.m.  Performances will be held in the Senior High Gym.  All seating is general admission.

      Jazz-n-Pizzazz Ticket Sales –Advance sale tickets will be available at the Benson Community Education Office (located in the senior high school) starting Monday, April 1 during office hours (8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.)  Ticket prices are $5.00.  Tickets are required for everyone attending the performances.

      First Aid and CPR – We are partnering with the Swift County-Benson Health Services for Heartsaver CPR/AED/First Aid.  This is a classroom, video-based, instructor led course that teaches students critical skills needed to respond to and manage a first aid, choking or sudden cardiac arrest emergency.  Upon successful course completion, you will receive an American Heart Association course completion card that is valid for 2 years.  The next course is tentatively scheduled for April 2019.  Call Benson Community Education at 320-843-4545 to register.

     Sunday Open Gym – Open Gym is from 1:00 – 3:30 pm in the senior high gym.  Participants should bring their own basketball.  To keep the gym floor clean and dry, please carry in your basketball/tennis shoes.  Use the main entrance in the high school circle drive (Door #1).  Last year, we had many wonderful businesses and individuals that sponsored Open Gym to keep it free.  The last day of Open Gym is Sunday, March 31st.

     Summer Softball and Baseball – Be watching for forms going home with students in April for registration information for summer ball traveling leagues.  Chippewa Valley Girls League is a Modified Pitch Softball for girls currently in grades 4-6.  West Central League Baseball is for boys currently in grades 3-6.

      Senior Defensive Driving Classes – Defensive Driving classes are offered to people 55 years of age and over to review and discuss courteous driving and the rules of the road.  If you are 55 years of age and older, you receive 10% off your auto insurance for three years, after completing the eight-hour class.  You must repeat the class every three years and can do this with the four-hour class.  The classes are held at the Benson High School Library.  Pre-registration is necessary.  Cost is $17.00 per class (payable to Benson Public Schools).   Registration and payment are due one week prior to the class.  Register online or by calling Community Education at 320-843-4545.  The classes are produced by the MN Safety Council.
